Valentine’s Day Flash Mob Calls on Albertans to Show They Love Alberta Art

Artists and arts supporters participated in a “flash mob” today to launch an advocacy campaign in support of better funding for the arts in Alberta.

“We are launching this campaign on Valentine’s day to call upon Albertans to show this government that we love the arts,” said Daniel Cournoyer, Chairperson of the Professional Arts Coalition of Edmonton (PACE), “Last year’s 16% cut to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts has had a huge impact across Alberta’s arts sectors. Considering the incredible economic impact of the arts–every $1 invested generates $8 to $11 in direct and indirect returns–how can our current government justify a cut in its investment to an industry performing so strongly?”

With the approach of another provincial budget, Alberta’s professional artists and arts organizations are remembering the 16 % cuts we encountered last year. It is widely held among the arts community that another cut like the one endured last year – or worse – will surely mean the death of many valued and innovative organizations in our province.
